課程概述

This course will prepare you to work in the specialised translation market, providing you with the relevant competences to translate scientific and technical texts. You will be introduced to scientific and technical translation through lectures and language-specific, interactive seminars.

課程目標

After introductory sessions on the characteristics of scientific and technical translation, you will translate a wide range of specialised texts belonging to scientific and technical domains (to include popular science articles, scientific journal papers, scientific reports, proposals, user guides, product documentation, technical specifications, etc.). You will be expected to apply your theoretical and conceptual background of translation to a very practical approach of using several translation technology applications that are used in the translation industry. These tools include terminology management and translation memory systems. The emphasis throughout is highly practical, and most of the sessions are hands-on in nature.

課程要求

Students are expected to:
1. Attend all lectures unless unavoidably prevented (should you not be ale to attend a specific session, always notify the lecturer, preferably in advance when possible)
2. Be punctual to lectures.
3. Work diligently throughout the academic year, and present all written work by the dates prescribed.
4. Work independently.
5. Contribute to class discussions, and offer oral presentations as required.
6. Learn and utilize appropriate research skills and methodologies to undertake their work.
7. Familiarize themselves with the use of computers and information/translation technology generally.
8. Use the NTU e-mail account as their prime source of contact and information

1.	Translation analysis and peer-review report	20%	Please show up on time for your group presentation. Lateness or rearrangements for group presentation will NOT be accepted.
2.	Class participation	20%	(1) Lateness: students who come in class more than 15 minutes late will be marked absent for the entire 3-hour-class period. (2) Attendance: Students absent three times or more without cause will deemed to have failed the course irrespective of the merits of your assessed work. If you are absent due to illness or other extenuating circumstances, please apply for a leave on the 'Student Leave Request System' and submit medical certificate or other appropriate documentation.
3.	Assignments	40%	(1) Absence from a class is no excuse for not knowing the assignment and what has been discussed in that class. It is your responsibility to ask your classmates what has been covered in the class. (2) Please submit your work on time. Delayed submission will NOT be accepted on any account. (3) DO NOT email any late assignments to my email account after the deadline.
4.	In-class activity	20%	(1) Lateness: students who come in class more than 15 minutes late will be marked absent for the entire 3-hour-class period. (2) If you are absent in case of uncontrollable situations (e.g. illness, emergency, important occasions, etc.), please apply for a leave on the 'Student Leave Request System'. (3) Students absent three times or more without cause will receive 0 credits.
